Short description
VR – ME is an ongoing Erasmus+ project, with a rather interesting field of expertise. The project aims to address the dangers and hazards, that jeopardize the safety of working staff in fishing vessels; through Virtual Reality. According to the research presented via the project, it is an occupation with a high-level of risk. Lots of incidents and injuries occur every year, with most of them happening due to human actions.
The top 3 contributing factors to the above are:
- Safety awareness,
- Lack of knowledge,
- Inadequate work methods.
VR – ME focuses on addressing incorrect management of emergencies and the general on-board organization, by developing a set of tools, as well as a course, which shall be applied on the training process of the working staff:
- The project begins with a study on maritime emergencies in fishing vessels. The study includes a list of emergencies, and accordingly develop the procedures to be followed. These procedures are then converted into VR Simulations.
- During the 2nd stage the project partners develop the VR environment where the user moves inside a fishing vessel and faces emergency scenarios and situations.
- At the last stage, partners test the simulator, in order to improve it, with the assistance of users, the feedback of which is taken into consideration. The User Manual is also produced.
Elements of innovation:
Currently, there is not a digital tool that is in favor of training workers occupied in the fishing sector, on how to react during emergency situations. VR – ME introduces Virtual Reality environments, as an effective learning and training tool, through which fishermen can experience these situations in immersive environments, moving around a 3D universe and interacting with people and objects.
Target groups
- Apart from the working staff, the project is aimed at professional of the fishing sector, vocational education and training providers, and academies in the fishing sector and work safety, public and private entities working in labor safety, professional associations of fishermen, cooperatives of fishermen, trainers, and public-private centers of training in fishing activities.
